begin by saying, Happy Mandela month – and don’t forget your 67 minutes! I am
not sure if you’re aware that publishing your articles on CSRNEWSSA is totally
free. Free, but not a free-for-all – we
do favour stories that are interesting and newsworthy for CSI and development practitioners.
Send us your stories, and we’ll gladly consider them.
Since its inception in September 2017, The Great Funders’ Conference has facilitated discussions with CSI managers and funders whose combined budgets stand at just under 5 billion rand. One company alone, Sasol, spoke about their 800 million rand CSI budget in 2018, and this year will be no different. We believe that the combined CSI budgets of all our speakers at this year’s conference is just under 10 billion rand.
In addition, this year’s conference will feature some of the most impressive and powerful banks and international funders we have yet hosted, all seeking worthy projects in South Africa to fund. You will find this information and more in the ‘intelligence report’ of our conference printed matter.
Below is the lowdown on some of the exciting things we’ve been busy with this month as we prepare for The Great Funders’ Conference (17 – 19 September 2019).
The Trevor Noah Foundation
think of Trevor Noah, we picture, energy, humour, intelligence, ambition and a
seemingly meteoric rise to success. Not many of us have heard of the
Trevor Noah Foundation – but if you’re a delegate to The Great Funders’ Conference (17 – 19 September), you’ll be
treated to a presentation by the Foundation’s regional executive director. Be
there, hear what the Foundation has to offer and discover how you can align
your NGO or NPO’s activities with the Foundation’s funding goals.
And with that introduction, let me inform you of our latest, exciting, behind-the-scenes developments as we prepare for a conference that is fast approaching.
Seats filling up
Our venue seats 200. Seats have been filling up, and we’re now sitting at about 180 seats. At least 20 companies or NGOs have reserved seats but have not yet paid. If you’re one of them, we advise you to pay soon, as these seats will not stay open much longer.
We have struck two great partnerships with a hotel and guest house in the area, one of which is already booked up with conference delegates. Let us know if you’ll be needing this service.
Wifi and pop-up office
For those who feel that three days is a long time away from the office, be assured that the conference is a wifi enabled zone, so you’ll never be out of contact. In addition, for media, speakers and delegates who have booked for the entire three days, our pop-up office will provide everything you need in terms of plug points and desk seating.
Day 1 programme
The programme has been finalised and will be shared with you shortly
Five free tickets
We’ve had a generous offer from a corporate delegate: MMI Holdings has bought tickets for five NGOs, awarding the following NGOs, who get to attend The Great Funders’ Conference 2019 for free:
- Winnie Mabaso Foundation
- Niche Wellness
- Phakamani Young Minds Academy
- Growing Champions
We’ve been hard at work planning a great opener for the conference – below you can click the link to view what to expect.
What about content? One of the many relevant topics we’ll be covering centres on the question of a united industry/ sector vision or agenda:
What we call: The Localised Sustainable Development Goals:
- Should we devise a common agenda, linked in some way to both the National Development Plan 2030 and the Thuma Mina vision?
- What would we call this collective CSI developmental vision or agenda?
- If we decide to adopt a common agenda, how do we hold ourselves and one another accountable to it?
- Is time for the South African development sector to establish its own localised strategic development goals?
Look out for this discussion on our conference programme.
Black tie and cocktail dress
Most of us enjoy a chance to dress up occasionally and chances are we have a great suit or cocktail dress tucked away and worn too seldom; bring it out, brush it off and step out sparkling for our cocktail function on the second evening. View the cocktail dress code here and listen to the music for the night here.
Conference within a conference
Excitingly, we’re in talks with a big partner who has tentatively booked to host its own major event within the conference. They’ve asked for the list of booked-up delegates so they can tailor their offering to the needs of our specific CSI community; their ideas so far look extremely promising.
A last note – VAT
In the past, CSRNEWSSA was a programme under the holding company, reached Media (Pty) Ltd (lower case intended!). At the beginning of 2019, the programme became a fully-fledged company that now operates independently, and as result, we are forced to pay and charge VAT. This won’t affect those who have already paid for their tickets , but for those paying after about two weeks from today, bookings will carry a 15% VAT fee above the fee. We’re sorry about this, but it’s one of the inevitable corollaries of change and growth!
Totally looking forward to meeting you all. Come
with ideas and a willingness to engage; the conference will be all the richer
for your presence. Have a great week!
